Description
OUR COVENANT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
• Covenant (Grk: diatheke) – a will, testament, pact, contract; an agreed upon plan to which both parties subscribe.
• The Bible is primarily made up of multiple covenants of promise between God and man. All else is secondary to that purpose.
Scripture broadly describes three ways that God and man relate in covenant with one another.
• One prophet named Zephaniah described God’s emotion about a healthy, restored covenant relationship between God and man. We can experience this today. Zephaniah 3:14-17
• In the new covenant with Jesus Christ, the apostles clarified who belongs to the “commonwealth (Grk: politeia) of Israel” to partake in the “covenants of promise.”
Ephesians 2:14-22 describes four great benefits of our membership in the “commonwealth of Israel” and participation in Israel’s “covenants of promise.”
• In the new covenant with Jesus Christ, the apostles taught that all who are in Christ are “citizens” of the “commonwealth of Israel,” and therefore participants in the “covenants of promise.” Ephesians 2:12, 19 (Ex.19:5-6; Deut. 26:18-19; 1 Pet. 2:9-10; Rev. 5:9-10)
• God knew His children in Christ would struggle in their faith to inherit the benefits of His “covenants of promise,” so He gave His Holy Spirit as a guarantee/down payment to help our faith. 2 Corinthians 1:20-22
• God is actively working in His people in the United States of America. He wants us to think in terms of a covenant relationship with Him and with one another. Psalm 105:7-8
Old Testament covenants of promise about God’s presence all point to our new covenant inheritance of God’s presence that can be experienced today.
• God instructed Moses to illustrate man’s access to His presence with a physical tabernacle that they could see and touch. Exodus 25:1-22
• In the new covenant, Jesus and His apostles “spiritualized” Moses’ tabernacle, redefining it as the church. Ephesians 2:13, Hebrews 12:18-24
God desires His children to join with the loud voice from heaven saying, “…Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God” (Rev. 21:3).
